Largest single contract in the history of tunnel technology

The A2 South Autobahn between Mooskirchen and the Packsattel has been one of Austria's central north-south routes for decades. After more than 40 years of operation and almost 20 years since its full expansion, a comprehensive overhaul of the Pack tunnel chain is now underway. With a total investment of approximately €260 million, including almost €60 million for tunnel technology, this is the largest single contract in the department's history. Construction began in autumn 2025 with the Herzogberg Tunnel, which will be the first section to be fully upgraded to state-of-the-art safety technology.

Technology, precision and teamwork

The renovation includes the Herzogberg, Mitterberg, and Kalcherkogel tunnels, as well as all open-air sections and bridges, covering a total length of approximately eleven kilometers. During the project, approximately 10 kilometers of tunnel tubes will be completely renovated, ten bridges repaired, four new cross-passages constructed, and all safety, energy, and control systems replaced. The work will be carried out while traffic continues, presenting a major technical and logistical challenge.

Highly qualified team – high-tech in action

The specialists in the tunnel technology department work around the clock to ensure smooth operations. From project planning to construction implementation and technical integration – all trades interact seamlessly. The team combines many years of experience with state-of-the-art engineering technology. Especially on projects of this magnitude, it becomes clear how important specialist knowledge, team spirit, and a sense of responsibility are in their daily work.

Planned implementation by the end of 2029:

  • Autumn 2025 – Autumn 2027: Renewal of the Herzogberg Tunnel and open-air section
  • Autumn 2027 – end of 2029: Renovation of the Mitterberg and Kalcherkogel tunnels
  • End of 2029: Completion and opening to traffic
